Call for Papers

The joint meeting of the Pacific-Southwest and Northern California Chapters of the American Musicological Society will be held on Saturday all day and Sunday morning, April 29 and 30, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. Proposals are invited for papers or other scholarly presentations (like lecture-recitals) on any subject of musicological interest. Papers or presentations should require no more than 30 minutes for full delivery, plus 10-15 minutes for questions and discussion. For further details, please see the chapter websites. This meeting will also feature the competition for the Ingolf Dahl Memorial Award in Musicology, which is given annually to the best student paper presented at the conference. Students must be currently enrolled in institutions within the boundaries of our two chapters. Details concerning the Dahl Competition may be found on the chapter websites. All students are strongly encouraged to work with faculty mentors to ensure that their papers are ready for professional presentation. Dahl Competition abstracts will be assessed separately by a committee chaired by last year’s winner, Alison Maggart, and will be evaluated according to the following criteria: organization and writing, innovation and contribution to the field, methodology, and potential for publication and future research. Three finalists will be chosen, all of whom will present their papers in the Sunday morning session of the meeting. An evaluation committee selected from those present at the meeting will then decide which paper receives the award. Those wishing to make a presentation at the joint meeting should submit an abstract of not more than 350 words by Saturday, March 25, along with the proposed title, author's name and institutional affiliation, and a list of the equipment necessary for the presentation. All abstracts should be sent by email to the Pacific-Southwest Chapter Secretary, Kristi Brown-Montesano (kbrown@colburnschool.edu). Students entering the Dahl Competition should specify in the cover email their intention to participate.

Lodging arrangements, Transportation options, and maps will be posted soon!

All meeting attendees are encouraged to renew chapter membership or to become members (visit our Membership page) and join us for future meetings. Membership must be renewed each academic year.
