Beginning with the 1995 Annual Meeting in New York City, the Society and the Committee on Cultural Diversity have hosted minority students at each annual conference. There the grantees enjoy a program that includes introductions to representatives of graduate programs in musicology from across the country, future colleagues and mentors, listening to papers covering a broad spectrum of musicological interests, exposure to the many interest groups within the Society, and opportunities to attend a variety of concerts.

In 2004, the Committee on Cultural Diversity Travel Fund received a record number of applicants, with the results that the new category of "Associate" was created, enabling students to leverage funding from their home institutions to attend the meeting in Seattle. Travel Fund recipients and Associates are upper-level undergraduates and MA candidates with impressive accomplishments ranging from research in the archives of the Berlin Singakademie and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, to LA film studio archives and the sources for works of Charles Ives.

Altogether the CCD awards have been presented to over 100 students since the Fund was established. See list of recipients.
