Charge: Consideration and evaluation of materials submitted by students who intend to complete a Ph.D. in musicology and who, as stated in the AMS Directory, are members “of a group historically underrepresented in the discipline.” The award supports one year of graduate work. Applications are encouraged, in the U.S., from African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and, in Canada, from visible minorities. Preference will normally be given to candidates who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. or Canada. The award will not be made to those who already have full funding roughly comparable to the amount of the Howard Mayer Brown Fellowship, regardless of whether it includes a teaching assignment, except on an honorary basis. The award consists of a one-time twelve-month stipend, which is conferred at the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation of the Society by the chair of the committee.
Guidelines: HMB Fellowships are awarded solely on the basis of merit, as determined by the evaluation of supporting documents to include: (1) a personal statement from the student summarizing his/her academic background and stating why she/he wishes to pursue an advanced degree in musicology; (2) a curriculum vitae; (3) letters of support from three faculty members; (4) samples of the applicant’s work such as term papers, thesis chapter(s), or any published material. In order to be considered for the Fellowship, applicants must have completed at least one year of graduate work, must be in good standing at their home institutions, and must intend to pursue a Ph.D. in musicology. For additional Guidelines, and further information on eligibility requirements and procedures for competition and application, see the AMS Directory and: www.ams-net.org/fellowships/hmb.php
Constitution: rotation of members. Generally five members, appointed to four-year overlapping terms.

The recipient of the award will be notified in the spring, and the award will be conferred at the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation of the Society the following autumn.
