Ongoing Grants and Fellowships Available

 

The organizations below offer grants or fellowships of varying sizes, for varying purposes, and with varying deadlines. The sortable table enables users quickly to find the most pertinent materials for their needs.

Newberry Library Fellowships early January
and March
$25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral Long-term fellowships (six to eleven months) provide assistance to researchers who wish to use the library’s collections. Short-term (one week to two months) fellowships are also available with awards ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.
Camargo Foundation mid-January $2,500 to $5,000 unrestricted Residency program for scholars and artists in Cassis, France. Residencies are for one month.
Liguria Study Center for the Arts and Humanities mid-January and April under $1,000 unrestricted Residency program in Bogliasco, Italy, for artists and scholars in the arts and humanities. Fellowships usually have a duration of one month or, in some cases, a half semester. Room and board included, stipends not provided.
American Handel Society: J. Merrill Knapp Research Fellowship mid-March $1,000 to $2,500 graduate student or new Ph.D. Fellowship award to be granted to an advanced graduate student or a scholar in the early stages of his or her career. The fellowship is intended to support work in the area of Handel or other related research. The winner of the award is given the opportunity to present a paper at the biennial meeting of AHS.
American Brahms Society: Karl Geiringer Fund Scholarship early May $1,000 to $2,500 graduate student Fellowship award to be granted to students at universities in North America who are in the final stages of preparing a doctoral dissertation that includes work relating to Brahms.
Music Library Association: Dena Epstein Award early July $1,000 to $2,500 unrestricted Research grant to support study in archives or libraries on any aspect of American music. There are no restrictions on who can apply; applications are reviewed entirely based on merit. Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program early August varies post-doctoral The program sends 800 faculty and professionals abroad to as many as 140 countries to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Other awards are available, please see the Web site for details.
Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowships mid-September $25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral Fellowships for research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts.
Columbia Society of Fellows in the Humanities at Columbia University early October $50,000-$75,000 post-doctoral Fellowships in the humanities for the academic year. Fellows are appointed as Lecturers in appropriate departments at Columbia University and as postdoctoral research fellows. The fellowship is renewable for a second and third year.
American Academy in Berlin early October
$10,000-$25,000 post-doctoral Fellowships to engage in independent study in Berlin for an academic semester or, in rare cases, for an entire academic year. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, round-trip airfare, and a generous apartment with partial board.
Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies mid-October $50,000-$75,000 post-doctoral Fellowships for independent study of the Italian Renaissance. Intended for scholars who are still in the earlier stages of their career
National Humanities Center Fellowships mid-October $50,000-$75,000 post-doctoral Fellowships for semester or academic year residence at the National Humanities Center in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina.
American Academy in Rome early November $10,000-$25,000 pre- and post-doctoral Pre- and post-doctoral fellowships for artists and scholars in the early or middle stages of their careers. Some opportunities exist for advanced scholars as well. The residency lasts for eleven months and each Rome Prize winner is provided with a stipend, meals, a bedroom with private bath, and a study or studio.
Berlin Program for Advanced German and European Studies early December $10,000-$25,000 graduate student or new Ph.D. Residential fellowships at the Freie Universität Berlin provide up to one-year of research support. Spouse and dependent support available.
Delmas Foundation mid-December $10,000-$25,000 pre- and post-doctoral Venetian Research Program: Pre- and post-doctoral grants for travel to and research in Venice and the Veneto for up to a full academic year.
French Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Chateaubriand Scholarship late December $10,000-$25,000 graduate student Residency at a French research institution for doctoral candidates.
American Antiquarian Society various varies pre- and post-doctoral Short-term fellowships ($1,000 to $2,500) for scholars to spend one to three months doing research in the AAS library. Dealine is early January. Long-term fellowships ($25,000-$50,000) for scholars to spend four to twelve months in the AAS library. Deadlines are in January, September, and October.
American Council of Learned Societies early October and November $50,000-$75,000 pre- and post-doctoral The ACLS Fellowship Program invites research applications in all disciplines of the humanities. The ultimate goal should be a major piece of scholarly work that will take the form of a monograph or other equally substantial form of scholarship. ACLS does not fund creative work, textbooks, straightforward translation, or pedagogical projects. The fellowships are intended as salary replacement (up to $60,000) to help scholars devote six to twelve continuous months to full-time research and writing. Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD) various varies unrestricted A wide variety of grants and scholarships for study or research in Germany, for faculty as well as students.
Humboldt Foundation Fellowships rolling $25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral Fellowships for research in Germany lasting six to twelve months. Applications may be submitted at any time.
International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX) various varies unrestricted A wide variety of grants to master’s, pre-doctoral, postdoctoral, and senior scholars, for travel and research, principally in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
Social Science Research Council: International Dissertation Research Fellowship early November $10,000-$25,000 graduate student The program is designed to support distinguished graduate students in the humanities and social sciences who are conducting dissertation research outside the US. Fellowships will last nine to twelve months.
American Academy of Arts & Sciences: Visiting Scholars Program mid-October  $25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral The program supports the work of younger public policy analysts, humanists, and social scientists who show promise of becoming leaders in their field, especially those who work on multidisciplinary topics. The Program offers opportunities for them to carry out their individual research as well as to collaborate with Academy Fellows on shared scholarly or policy-related interests. Preference is given to untenured junior faculty; the Ph.D. should have been completed within the last 10 years.
Kurt Weill Foundation for Music early November varies unrestricted Grants to support research and performance projects relating to Kurt Weill and his wife, actress-singer Lotte Lenya.  Grants are available for research and travel, symposia, publication assistance, dissertation fellowships, college/university performance and productions, recording projects, broadcasts, and professional performance and production.
School of Advanced Study, University of London (Institute of Musical Research) late January $25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral Six-month fellowships for senior scholars to complete research in London. Fellows are based at one or more of the ten Institutes within the School of Advanced Study, give a formal lecture and take a leading intellectual role. Non-stipendiary.

Junior and Post-Doctoral fellowships for an academic year of study, teaching, and residence in the Center.  The FCHI Fellows Program offers research opportunities to those trained in the humanities as traditionally defined and to others seriously interested in humanistic issues. We especially seek applicants and projects that will benefit from and contribute to the interdisciplinary nature of the group.

Kartomi PhD in Music Scholarship: Monash University
end October $25,000-$50,000 graduate student

The scholarship is available to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and international applicants who have completed a four year undergraduate, masters preliminary or masters degree at H1 level or equivalent and who propose to undertake a PhD in music. The scholarship may be held in any field of music compatible with the research plans of the School. Award holders will receive a generous stipend and may also be eligible for allowances for establishment, relocation, research and thesis production. Scholarship period: 3 years full-time.

National Endowment for the Humanities early May $25,000-$50,000 post-doctoral Fellowships provide support for individuals pursuing advanced research in the humanities that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the general public's understanding of the humanities. Recipients usually produce scholarly articles, monographs, books, translations, editions, or other scholarly tools. Fellowships support full-time work on a humanities project for a period of six to twelve months. Summer stipends ($5,000-$10,000) are also available for two consecutive months of full-time research and writing; deadline is early October.
