Krummel.
The New Grove article gives a comprehensive survey of both printing and
publishing music. The authors discuss
briefly the work of Armando Dal Molin and describe the use of the

The ideas in the two
chapters listed above are useful when it comes to understanding the concern for
detail and consistency important to good engraving and editorial practice.
Donato, Anthony.
Preparing Music Manuscript. New York:
Amsco Music Publishing Co., 1963.
Donato offers a basic
introduction to writing good manuscript, and gives general principles which are
taken further in the more detailed works of Read and Ross. This is a good guide for preparing
manuscript to be set.
Read, Gardner.
Music Notation: A Manual of Modern Practice. New York: Taplinger Publishing Co., 1979.
Gardner Read is more
encyclopedic than prescriptive when it comes engraving practice. If a symbols exists, Read shows it, often
placing it within the context in which it occurs.
Ross, Ted. The Art of Music Engraving and Processing. Miami:
Hansen Books, 1970.
This guide by Ross is the
standard reference on music engraving.
Even though it is sometimes difficult to read, this books covers the
basics of music engraving in detail.
Ross's book fails to include mention of current computer programs for
engraving music, but the parameters for good style can be applied to these new
tools.
Stone, Kurt. Music Notation in the Twentieth
Century: A Practical Guidebook. New York:
W.W. Norton & Co., Inc., 1980.
Stone's book can be used to
supplement both Read and Ross. This book is important for its exposition on
notation for new music, as well as its coverage of notation for specific
instruments.
