Proposed By-laws amendment regarding the object of the Society

At the Indianapolis Annual Meeting (2010), the AMS Council formed an ad hoc subcommittee to consider adding a reference to teaching to the Object (Mission) Statement of the Society (By-laws, article II). The committee made a recommendation to the AMS Council at the San Francisco Annual Meeting (2011). After discussion, the following proposed amendment was approved by AMS Council (39 in favor, 6 opposed, 1 abstention):

CURRENT AMS BY-LAWS (Article II): The object of the Society shall be the advancement of research in the various fields of music as a branch of learning and scholarship.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT: The object of the Society shall be the advancement of scholarship in the various fields of music through research, learning, and teaching.

Process

Per the By-laws, Article XII, a discussion regarding the proposed amendment will take place at the AMS Annual Meeting in New Orleans (1-4 November 2012). The entire membership will vote on the amendment through a paper or email ballot following the Annual Meeting.
