Eileen Southern Travel Fund

Beginning with the 1995 Annual Meeting in New York City, the Society and the Committee on Cultural Diversity have hosted minority students at each annual conference to expose them to various aspects of the field. These elements might include introductions to representatives of graduate programs in musicology from across the country, future colleagues and mentors, listening to papers covering a broad spectrum of musicological interests, exposure to the many interest groups within the Society, and opportunities to attend a variety of concerts.

The CCD can help foster a more diverse Society only with the assistance of its members. In addition to your generous contributions to the Eileen Southern Travel Fund, we encourage members to identify promising minority undergraduates and terminal masters degree candidates who may be considering graduate work toward a doctorate and would qualify for travel assistance. The Southern Travel Fund awards help to cover the travel expenses of students attending the annual conference.

In November 2010, the Society hosted the following Eileen Southern Travel Fund recipients at the annual meeting in Indianapolis:

RECIPIENTS (previous recipients)

Christopher Bowen (Catholic University of America)
Vicente Chavarria (University of Miami)
Faith Avilene DePano (Rice University)
Marion Jacob (University of Delaware)
Lindsey Jones (University of Toronto)
Shamor Peeler-Dean (UNC Greensboro)
Andy Tang (University of Texas at Austin)
Alysse Padilla (UCLA)

The CCD will continue this important work for the upcoming AMS Annual Meeting. The AMS has funds available to assist minority undergraduates and terminal masters degree candidates (African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Hispanic-Americans, Native-Americans, and other traditionally under-represented groups) with travel and lodging expenses.

The deadline for San Francisco has passed. The program will continue next year; please apply prior to 15 September 2012.
