Harold Powers World Travel Fund for Research on Music

The Harold Powers World Travel Fund is intended to encourage and assist Ph.D. candidates, post-docs, and junior faculty in all fields of musical scholarship to travel anywhere in the world to carry out the necessary work for their dissertation or other research. The Fund honors the polymathic scholar and distinguished longtime AMS member whose publications have ranged from music and language to medieval mode to Indian music to Puccini and whose interests are wider still, but always with the communicative aspects of music at their base. The current maximum award is set at $2,000.

Eligible applicants must currently attend or have graduated from a doctoral program in a North American university. If they seek to conduct research for their dissertation, they must have completed all other requirements for the Ph.D. (or the equivalent doctoral degree in any field of music scholarship). If they seek to conduct post-doctoral research, they should have completed the Ph.D. within the past five years.

The application should be in the form of a statement of up to 1,000 words describing the research topic, a research plan, projected itinerary, and institutions where research would occur. It should also provide a budget for travel and lodging. The latter should state the amount of support that can be provided by the applicant’s home institution, if applicable. Letters of support are required from two scholars: if applicable, one must be the present or former dissertation advisor. All materials must be submitted by 5 p.m. EST, 3 March to the office of the AMS. The winner(s) will be announced by 1 May and at the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Presentation.

Please submit materials via e-mail attachment to the office of the AMS. Letters of support may likewise be e-mailed or faxed to the AMS office.
